Almost daily I receive dog behaviour training emails asking: “how so I stop my puppy from biting?” or “my puppy cries all night” or asking how to stop their puppy from whining, barking or chewing.
Puppies bite for a number of reasons: because they are teething, because it’s fun, because it gets a reaction (and puppies love attention) and because they’re bored. The best thing you can do is to invest in a puppy chew toy and stuff it with their food; perhaps even put a little water in with their food and put in the freezer overnight to create a highly chewable frozen food toy. Each time your puppy bites you, say “ow!” as if they really hurt you, and walk off away from them. Completely ignore them - don’t talk to them or look at them. If you can, walk out of the room and leave them for 10 seconds. Repeat this every time your puppy bites you and they’ll quickly learn that biting loses their playmate. Get them addicted to their chew toy and show them that biting you hurts and ends all the fun and they won’t have any need to bite you. It’s critical to teach your puppy bite inhibition so that they learn to have gentle jaws - when puppy grows into a dog, their jaws are much more powerful and will do a lot of unintentional damage if this isn’t taught early in its life.
